Creating a Ready-to-go Challenges - Steps Challenge

The step challenge is the most common challenge we offer. However, our Ready-to-go version is packed with all the powerful and unique features you may want to include in your step challenge. To create a Ready-to-go step challenge, complete the steps outlined below. Please note that other challenges may follow a different path.

  1. After completing the steps in the Creating a Ready-to-go Challenge article, you will arrive at an Options screen. Here you will be prompted to choose the options for your step challenge. The standard options are:

    1. Add a daily step goal – By default, your step challenge will include a leaderboard for tracking who has the most steps throughout the event. Including a daily step goal creates an additional leaderboard that recognizes consistent performance from the participants. Whichever participants reach the daily goal most often will be at the top of the leaderboard.
    2. Add a team leaderboard – If you want to add a team component to your leaderboard, select this option.

Once you’ve decided on these options, select NEXT.

  1. You are now at the Configuration screen.  Here you will be prompted to choose the configuration settings for your step challenge. The standard options are:

    1. Team Options – this is only offered if you selected the team option on the previous screen. If you do not see it and you intend to include teams, select the BACK button. Your configuration options are:
      1. Chosen by participant – this option invites participants to create their own team or join a team that another participant created. If you select this option, you are asked if you want to put a maximum team size for your participant-created teams. You do not have to set the maximum option.
      2. Automatically assigned – this option allows our system to randomly assign people to teams. If you choose this option, you will need to select a naming scheme from the dropdown menu. A maximum team size is required so our system knows when to create a new team. The system will wait until 24 hours before the start of an event before it starts to assign participants.
      3. Assigned by admin – this option puts the responsibility of creating teams and assigning participants to teams on the administrator. This can be done from the administrator’s tool after setup is complete. Regardless of which assignment option is chosen, the administrator can always change assignments.
    2. Automatic Step Conversion – If you want to take advantage of the feature that tracks and converts the time participants log performing different activities (e.g., swimming, yoga, weightlifting) into steps, select this option. This is a great way to get everyone involved in your challenge. If you select this option, you will be prompted to decide if you want the display units for your event to be in steps or in points.
    3. Allow Manual Entries – If you want to allow users to input their steps manually, select this option. This is a good option if you expect that some participants will not use the mobile app or connect to a fitness tracker. Even if this option is disabled, an administrator always has the option to allow manual activities on a participant-by-participant or day-by-day basis.

Once you’ve made your selections, click NEXT.

  1. You are now at a Leaderboards screen, and you will be asked about settings for the leaderboards in your step challenge.  The standard options are:

    1. Leaderboard: Individual Steps – this leaderboard ranks participants by the number of steps they accumulate throughout the event. Options are:
      1. Show progress on a virtual map – If you select this option, you are prompted to choose one of our virtual journeys. As users accumulate more steps, they arrive at various landmarks along the journey. If you select this option, you must also select a goal for the leaderboard, so we know how many steps are required to reach each intermediate landmark.
      2. Set a goal for this leaderboard – this option allows you to establish how many steps each participant should strive for by the end of the challenge. This setting is optional unless you choose a virtual journey above. This option has a handy calculator. The calculator will multiply the daily step goal by the length of the event to suggest the total steps for the challenge.
      3. Show collective progress – turning on this option displays how many steps are accumulated by all participants in the challenge. With this option, you also have the ability to set an event-wide goal. There is another handy calculator for finding what your collective progress goal should be. The calculator will multiply the daily step goal by the duration in days of the event to suggest the total steps for all participants in the challenge.
    2. Leaderboard: Daily Target – If you opted for a daily target in the Options screen, this is where you set the daily target.
    3. Leaderboard: Team Steps – If you selected to have teams in the Configuration screen, this item will be displayed. There are no further options to choose from for teams.

Once you’ve configured your leaderboards, select FINALIZE

You will be taken to the administrator’s home screen for the newly created event. The left side of the screen is organized for easy navigation to the comprehensive features of the event management Admin Dashboard.
