Badges

Badges allow you to add any kind of intermediate goals in your challenge to keep your participants engaged during the challenge. Badges are associated with specific leaderboards and are managed in the Badges section in the leaderboard's settings within the Event Manager.

Some badges are automatically generated when you design the leaderboard. For example, virtual journey landmarks/milestones and daily or weekly goal badges in Daily/Weekly Target leaderboards are generated when you create the leaderboard. Other badges need to be manually created.

Regardless of whether the badge is automatically or manually created, badges have many options that you can choose from. You should use care when adjusting any of these options. This is especially true for badges that are automatically created.

Badges have several actions associated with them. These actions are accessed by selecting the appropriate icon under the Actions section of the badge list. The icons look like this:

Possible actions include:

  • Edit (Pencil Icon) - This allows you to define the options that determine how and when the badge will be issued.
  • Design (Paint Bucket Icon) - This allows you to choose the appearance of the badge.
  • Add Along Course (Route Icon) - For leaderboards associated with virtual journeys, this allows you to place new milestones along the journey.
  • Delete (Trash Can Icon) - This allows you to remove the badge from the leaderboard.
  • Send (Trophy Icon) - Some badges can only be awarded by the event administrator and only when certain conditions are satisfied. For example, a badge that is earned once the total participant step count reaches a specific number associated with a badge (also known as "collective badges" and is discussed further below), the administrator will be notified that it is now available to be awarded.

More details on those actions that have additional options are listed below.

Edit

Badge settings have multiple options available. The options are broken into groups.

Badge

All badges must have a name.

Popup Window

Details for the Popup Window options can be found in the knowledge base article at this link.

Configuration

Use these settings to configure each badge.

  • Active - This option should be turned on if you intend to have the badge awarded during your challenge. You can prevent a badge from being awarded if you turn it off.
  • Based on Collective Progress - This option is only visible if its leaderboard has the Collective Progress option enabled. If so, this badge will be available to be awarded once the collective goal for all participants in the challenge is reached. The collective goal is defined in the Goals section of the badge's settings.
  • Show on Map - Select this option to show a badge on the course map for your virtual journey.
  • Post to Feed - This option adds the achievement of the badge to the event feed.
  • Hide until rewarded - By default, all badges are visible on the leaderboard throughout the event. Badges that have not yet been awarded are dimmed. If, instead, you do not want them to be visible until they are achieved, select this option.
  • Only After Badge - This dropdown allows you to set a dependency for the badge so it can't be achieved until some other badge is achieved. This is designed for events such as triathlons in which the order in which an activity is performed should be followed.
  • Bonus Score - If you want to encourage users to perform optional bonus activities, such as uploading a selfie, this is where you would enter the value of that activity. For example, in a step challenge, a user can earn 500 extra "steps" if they upload a selfie. Note that if a bonus is applied to a badge, the bonus is added to the user's total score for the challenge and does not show up as part of their daily score. In the previous example of a selfie badge, if a participant accumulated 50,000 steps in the challenge and one of those days they walked 10,000 steps and uploaded a selfie with a 500-step bonus, their total steps for the day would appear as 10,000, but the score for the event would be 50,500.
  • Active from (included) and Active til (included) - The dates entered in this field will constrain the dates that the badge can be earned. For example, in a four-week challenge, if you only want the badge to be available for the first week, the Active from date would be the first day of your challenge and the Active til date would be the date for day seven of your challenge.

Goals

There are many goal types available the selection of which determines how a badge is earned. Below is a list of the most common. If the goal is not listed below, it is intended to be used for events that include our Setup Service. Also, note that some goal selections have additional options that are beyond the scope of this article.

  • Score Value - The current score value is used. The score value depends on the challenge type. For example, for a total distance challenge, this will be the total distance completed. You can set either an absolute value or a percentage of the challenge goal to award the badge.
  • Completed distance - This is the total distance throughout the challenge. This is typically used for Distance challenges
  • Completed elevation gain and Completed elevation loss - This is similar to the completed distance but is based on the total elevation gained or lost throughout the challenge. Note that only a select number of fitness trackers will log elevation changes.
  • Total active duration - This is the total active time throughout the challenge. This is typically used for activity time challenges
  • Consecutive days - This is the number of consecutive calendar days with at least one qualifying activity. Please note that this is based on calendar days and not 24 hours. For example, a participant who runs in the morning on day one and in the evening on day two would qualify for this badge.
  • Consecutive weeks - This is the number of consecutive calendar weeks with at least one qualifying activity. Please note this is based on calendar weeks. For example, if the event starts on a Friday and participants have qualifying activities on day one and day five (Tuesday), they will earn a "Week 1" and "Week 2" badge within just a few days.
  • Activity - This goal type awards badges for specific activities. You can filter on the activity type and further refine the goal based on a minimal distance or a maximum duration. This allows you, for example, to create a badge for a sub-five-hour marathon time or a one-kilometer fragment of a run.
    • When the distance is set we calculate the actual time required to complete that distance in the qualifying activity.  This means if you set a 5k goal but the participant slowed down after the 5k while keeping the activity recording we will still take the fast 5k part of the activity.
    • When the distance is set only activities with at least that distance can qualify
    • When the duration is set only activities faster than the given duration can qualify
  • Linked Race Result - Use this option to link a badge to a result of the same participant in another challenge. The badge value will be updated every time the score from that other challenge is updated. Use this option to combine multiple sub-results in one overall result such as a broken triathlon or a multi-distance race.
  • Manual Claim - This option is typically selected for 360° WellBeing challenges in which participants log the completion of an activity (e.g., going on a nature week, reading a book). To claim this badge, participants select the qualifying activity in the app.
  • Share a photo/selfie - If you want to encourage participants to upload photos to the social feed, you can create badges that are automatically earned when they upload the photo. Many organizers include bonus points for earning this badge.
  • Share a story - If you want to encourage participants to post a story to the social feed, you can create badges that are automatically earned when they enter the text. Many organizers include bonus points for earning this badge.
  • Coordinate - This option allows you to create badges that will be triggered by activities within a defined radius of the given coordinate. This is great for virtual treasure hunts or other badges which are bound to a specific location. Please note that only activities with a GPS track can qualify for this type of badge and manual entries cannot unlock this badge type (as we don't know where the user was).

Email

Enable the email option to have an automatic email sent when this badge is earned. The email contains a Share option which helps to increase engagement of this challenge.

Design

When you select the Design action for a new badge, you are presented with the following options:

  • Color (code or name) - enter the name of the color (e.g., "blue") or select the square to the right of the color field to see a color picking widget.
  • Upload an image - select an image from your computer to upload as the badge. If you select this option, all other Design options are disabled.
  • Text on badge - enter whatever text you would like to appear within the badge.
  • Shape - select a shape for your badge in the dropdown menu.
  • Icon - select the icon you would like to appear within your badge in the dropdown menu.

Add Along Course

You can add additional landmarks to your virtual journey by selecting this option and dragging the pin to the location on the route where you would like this new landmark to be earned. Once you drag the pin and select ADD BADGE, you will be presented with a page that displays the options from the Edit action.

After configuring your badge, remember to select SAVE to preserve your settings.
